Carolyn graduated from the University of Nottingham with a BSc degree in Biochemistry in 2011, and received her PhD in Biochemistry from the same university in 2016.

Her research investigated the redox role of the transcription factor STAT3 in cell survival during oxidative stress using a range of molecular biology techniques including cell culture, transfection, genome engineering (inc. Cre-Lox recombination), next generation sequencing, qRT-PCR and immunoprecipitation, as well as bioenergetics and bioinformatics. Carolyn also has experience with techniques such as flow cytometry, microscopy and peptide synthesis.

During her PhD, Carolyn broadened her technical skillset by spending 6 months in a laboratory at Virginia Commonwealth University, USA. Carolyn’s research has been published in PLOS ONE. Upon completion of her PhD, Carolyn entered the patent profession. Following a year in the profession, Carolyn obtained a Postgraduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Bournemouth University, for which she was awarded a distinction.

Carolyn then went on to qualify as a European Patent Attorney in 2021. Carolyn now continues building on her experience, particularly in the area of European oppositions.
